United States
CEDIA Seeks Recognition for Technology Integrators at the Federal Level
CEDIA has filed comments with the United States government to advocate for the establishment of the Technology Integrators occupational code. By doing so, CEDIA aims to ensure that the professional contributions of Technology Integrators are accurately recognized and classified. In addition to submitting comments to the Standard Occupational Classification Policy Committee (SOCPC), CEDIA worked with Congress to submit a letter of support for this initiative and to bring greater awareness to the government agency about the importance of establishing a separate occupational code for Technology Integrators.
Freedom To Invest in Tomorrow’s Workforce Act Provisions Advances Out of Committee
CEDIA lobbied for this bill in Washington in March. In July, key provisions from the “Freedom To Invest in Tomorrow’s Workforce Act” were included in the “Education and Workforce Freedom Act” passed by the House Ways and Means Committee. These provisions will broaden the scope of qualified expenses under 529 savings plans to include post-secondary training and credentialing for workers of all educational backgrounds and skill levels. In 2025, CEDIA will continue to advocate for legislation that supports access to education for the smart home industry.
CEDIA Adds Technology Integrator Input to National Electrical Code® Updates
Representatives Michael Cogbill and Ken Erdmann of CEDIA’s Code-Making Panel 3 have been integral in reviewing changes and submissions to the 2026 edition of the National Electrical Code® (NEC). During a series of meetings, the pair provided valuable feedback on several proposed updates, including those related to limited energy systems. Even small changes to the NEC can significantly impact the work of Technology Integrators, making it crucial to have a proactive voice in these discussions.
CEDIA Prepares for Key Advocacy in NAICS Revisions to Support Technology Integrators
CEDIA is preparing to contribute to revisions to the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS), a standardized system for categorizing business establishments. In December, the Federal Register will solicit proposals for updates to NAICS codes for 2027, and CEDIA has developed strategies to advocate for adjustments supporting limited energy systems contractors. These updates will enhance data reporting and classification for Technology Integrators, offering a clearer representation of their role in the smart home sector.
Australia/New Zealand
CEDIA Pushes for Occupation Classification in Australia and New Zealand
CEDIA has submitted proposals in Australia and New Zealand for the recognition of “Smart Home Technology Integrator” as an official occupation. Australia is preparing to finalize its Occupation Standard Classification for Australia (OSCA), formerly ANZSCO, where CEDIA’s submission awaits review. New Zealand’s separate classification updates are also forthcoming, marking the first time either country may approve integrator recognition independently.

CEDIA Achieves Industry Recognition and Amplifies Efforts in the UK
Thanks to CEDIA's dedicated efforts, "Smart Home Installer" is now officially listed on the National Careers Service website, providing visibility and encouraging new talent to explore careers in this dynamic field. Additionally, CEDIA is in the process of establishing a UK Government Affairs Committee to amplify advocacy efforts and engage directly with policymakers on issues affecting the industry. To further support its members, CEDIA joined TechUK, a prominent technology association, ensuring members stay informed on key developments in the region.
